Is it better to use a lot of gestures or keep hands still when speaking?

I've been preparing for a talk on a technical topic. I keep hearing conflicting advice. Some say gestures help keep the audience engaged, others say too much movement is distracting. I can't decide. What do you think? Does the audience prefer more gesturing or a more restrained style? Also, does the subject matter affect this? I'm looking for real-world experience.

Public speaking strategy that worked

I've been trying to improve my public speaking skills and I think I've finally found something that works for me. I've started preparing by focusing on my key points and trying to simplify my message. Instead of scripting out my entire presentation, I've been making an outline and then practicing my delivery. This has helped me feel more comfortable and confident when speaking in front of a group. I also make sure to practice in front of a mirror and record myself so I can identify areas for improvement. Has anyone else tried this approach? What are some other strategies that have worked for you?

why do some crowds totally derail a presentation

ngl was giving a demo at a small venue earlier and something wild clicked with people. like they just started buzzing nonstop through the whole thing from some off comment in first row. i lost control. not sure if it was funny or cringy or why it escalated like that. maybe i just freeze when a whole room acts in sync to their mood but im used to working in smaller more stable groups of people. someone got in to make stuff awkward but most just followed along so hard it went wild.

Slide deck froze mid-presentation... again

So there I was, halfway through a talk, and the laptop just decides to freeze. Not a crash, just unresponsive. Had to wing it for 10 minutes while IT sorted it. Frustrating because the visuals were key. Any other horror stories? How do you handle tech fails gracefully?

any tips for staying calm when the crowd feels like a bowl of ghost peppers?

so i got roped into doing a talk at the local meetup tomorrow and i’m already sweating like i just ate a habanero challenge any seasoned speakers got a go-to routine that actually works? i’m not looking for generic breathing fluff, need something real tbh. also, how do you handle that moment when you lose your train of thought and the room’s staring like they’re waiting for the next bite? i’m scared i’ll just freeze lol

Why my conference talk on logistic maps turned into a disaster: Help with Lyapunov exponents in presentations

Last week during a panel on chaos theory, I accidentally calculated the Lyapunov exponent for my slide transitions using a linear decay model instead of the required exponential formulation. The result? A 45-minute lecture where my visual aids diverged like strange attractors while my audience’s confusion grew at a logistic rate.

Specifically, I misapplied the formula λ = limₜ→∞ (1/t) Σ log|df/dx| over my slide timing intervals. Instead of demonstrating sensitivity to initial conditions, my Powerpoint animations now resemble a damped harmonic oscillator.

This isn’t just academic. When I tried to pivot by saying "Ah yes, this illustrates the butterfly effect in real time," the chair had to intervene. How do you recover from a mathematical inconsistency in live public speaking?

Bonus question: Does anyone else struggle with the topology of stage presence? I swear my confidence interval shrank below statistical significance that day.

Which speaking technique do you find most effective for climate science talks?

Running a quick poll on the most useful speaking techniques for climate science presentations.

Options

  • A) 5‑Second Rule (brief intro, hook the audience in 5 seconds)
  • B) 3‑Second Rule (even faster hook, ideal for social media clips)
  • C) Feynman Technique (explain the concept as if to a child)
  • D) Storytelling with climate narratives (use a narrative arc to frame data)
  • E) Data‑Driven Slides with minimal text (focus on visuals, let the data speak)

Vote by commenting the letter of your choice and drop a line on why it works for you. Looking forward to the insights!

i once had to speak in front of a crowd and it was basically a sushi roll gone wrong

so imagine i was at this meetup, all dressed up, eyes on me, and instead of my prepared points my tongue just kept going off like a sushi chef in a rush. i kept slapping my hand over my mouth to silence the panic, but the audience kept that hungry gaze. im not talking about how the whole thing was epic or something i got praise for, no that was a different story. it's just this stupid feeling when you're supposed to be in control and your mind decides to do the exact opposite like that surprise nigiri that hits all the wrong textures. kinda like when the rice is too mushy, you think it’s ok until the flavor hits you like a bullet of regret. and i can’t just roll back to normal, like pulling the fish out of a roll and starting over. just wanted to let someone know i’m still freaking out about that whole thing, and i'm not sure if it was just nerves or a bigger personal crisis. lol

Why does the USDA keep pushing the Instant Pot Duo Evo Plus as a policy solution for meal prep?

Last week I was on stage at a public speaking contest and had to defend the "Meal Prep for All" initiative. Everyone just laughed and moved on.

The problem is the USDA is basically turning the Instant Pot Duo Evo Plus 6‑quart into a political icon.

  • USDA 2025: $1B subsidy for manufacturers of the Instant Pot Duo Evo Plus 6‑quart.
  • FDA labeling guidelines: "Nutrient Density Index (NDI)" is a vague, math‑heavy metric that can be gamed.
  • EPA 2025 regulations: push for 3.0 "Nutrient Density Index" compliance, but the actual food content is barely checked.
  • Politicians: "Convenience for the masses" – sounds great until you see the big agribusiness contracts.
  • The trend: 3D‑printed meal prep containers, ThermoPro TP‑02 digital thermometer, and the new Sous Vide 3.0 immersion circulator. They’re all sold as health solutions, but the reality is a marketing circus.

Why does the government keep promoting this? Is it really about nutrition or just about sales?

People keep asking: "Does this actually help people eat better?" I keep seeing the same tired answer: "Because it’s convenient."

I’m exhausted from trying to explain this at every speech. The political narrative is so flat that it feels like a bad joke – one that never ends.

Does anyone else see this as a cynical marketing ploy wrapped in policy? Or am I the only one who notices the disconnect between the big ads and the actual food quality?

Help: Choosing a handheld microphone for live cooking demos – SM58 vs e935 with cardioid vs supercardioid patterns

Running a weekend brunch where I guide people through risotto. Need a mic that captures my voice over stovetop hiss but ignores the clatter of pans. Using a Shure SM58 on a boom arm right now; feedback spikes when the sous‑chef chops nearby. Looking for alternatives that work with a small PA and have strong off‑axis rejection.

Specifics I care about:

  • Frequency response flat around 2‑5 kHz (speech intelligibility range)
  • Built‑in pop filter or need for an external one
  • Compatibility with SM58‑type XLR cable up to 15 m

Any thoughts on Sennheiser e935, Audio‑Technica PRO44, or newer options like Shure Beta 58A? Also, recommendations for a portable vocal booth or foam windshield that fits a kitchen prep table would be helpful.
