how do i keep my marathon tempo runs from feeling like a 1000‑page dense graphic novel?

so i’m doing my usual 18‑mile tempo on the weekend and suddenly i’m stuck in a 12‑panel splash page of a 90s indie comic. the legs feel as heavy as a full‑bleed double‑wide spread and my mind is stuck on the gutter between panels. anyone else get that vibe when the Nike ZoomX Vaporfly 4% starts to feel like a 1998 Spider‑Man #1 reprint?

  • i tried the classic 80/20 MAF method but my lactate threshold still screams “nope, this is a full‑color splash page”
  • switched to Hoka Clifton 9 for a “lighter” feel, but now i’m stuck in a black‑and‑white noir strip, all shadows and no flow
  • tried a 5‑min fartlek every 4 miles, hoping to add some “panel pacing” like a good comic arc, but the gutters just get wider

any tips on how to make the run feel more like a tight, 6‑panel punch‑out rather than a never‑ending graphic novel? maybe a specific cadence or a shoe model that doesn’t double‑page spread my calves? tbh i’m ready to trade my marathon for a 12‑issue limited series if i can’t fix this.

also, shoutout to anyone who’s ever used a “comic‑run split” (run 3 miles, read 10 pages, repeat) – does it actually help or just make you miss the next cliffhanger?

Difficulty deriving Maclaurin series for (1+x)^a where a is fractional

I have been working on the power series expansion of (1+x)^a with a fractional exponent, say a = 1/3. I know that the generalized binomial theorem gives (1+x)^a = Σ_{k=0}^{∞} binomial(a, k) x^k, where binomial(a, k) = a(a-1)...(a-k+1)/k!. However, when I try to compute the coefficients explicitly, I keep running into confusion about signs and convergence radius. For instance, what is the second coefficient when a = 1/3? It seems to come out negative, but my calculator gives a positive number for small x, so I'm not sure if I've set up the product correctly. Also, I want to confirm that the radius of convergence remains 1 for non-integer a – is there a concise proof you could point me toward? Finally, would an alternative approach using Taylor's formula with the nth derivative at zero be more reliable for higher terms? Any step-by-step guidance would be greatly appreciated, and I apologize in advance for the length of my question – I just want to make sure I understand every nuance. Thanks in advance for your patience!

why we should ditch the 'crossover event' hype

i'm tired of every other month seeing a new crossover that just feels like a marketing ploy rn i think the whole 'crossover' thing is just a way to boost sales and confuse readers tbh it's a waste of time and story space lol i know some of you love the big battles but the plot gets lost in the hype and the characters get stretched too thin i say stop it and focus on solid arcs instead

Anyone else feeling out of the loop with modern dc crossovers?

just picked back up with dc because a friend lent me dc100 (which was pretty wild but i’m still catching up) i usually go for self-contained mini-series like dceu, dark dc or any dc black label i get my hands on (tbh the latter is more my speed lol)

i’m not into yearly "story events" bc i’m lazy but maybe someone who keeps track would know good starting points idk if it makes sense anyway mark waid said the 88 story line looked neat idk how i feel about jumping into that yet

@/u/ComicGuruType here or anyone who gets paid to know these things feel free to slap my wrists if you know more lol drop a rec 👇

Stop romanticizing grift. Comics were funder

I saw another post about modern horror-adjacent storylines getting called "refreshing" and now I'm done. Where do we all lose this obsession with making kids comics look like someone just walked on a warzone? A decade ago we treated Star Wars like it had a built-in right to exist. Now we think Daredevil needs to be 30-issue character death spirals to be taken seriously. The market rewards self-destruction so much you'd think the entire medium was built on bad debt. Just saw a new issue where a pre-teen kid's moral code hinges on whether he drinks his morning cereal milk. That's not narrative depth—that's moralizing in a trench coat.

Why is the Batman: The Long Halloween #12 (1996) variant with red logo so underrated? Need y'alls takes

tbh the red logo variant of long halloween #12 gets zero love compared to the standard. i mean sure the original art is the same but the red border makes it pop way more. anyone else think this is a hidden gem or am i missing something? also, if y'all have seen this variant in near mint let me know bc i'm considering snagging one. imo the 90s batman variants are way more creative than modern stuff but maybe that's just nostalgia talking. what's your take

Why does the latest issue's art style feel like a C4 1:1 printer glitch?

tbh i just finished the latest issue of X and the art feels like a c4 1:1 printer glitch lol

the color bleed is off the rails the line work is too flat the shading looks like a 300dpi scan of a photocopy and the palette is stuck on pantone 300c and 740c like a bad mood board

i think the penciler was using a c4 1:1 model of a 3d printer to render the panels which explains the weird geometry and the lack of depth

the colorist probably used a 8k c4 1:1 LUT that was meant for film not comics so the colors are too saturated and the blacks are crushed

i guess the publisher is trying to save money by using a c4 1:1 printer that prints at 1:1 scale but the result is a flat washed out comic that feels like a bad copy of a comic book

anyone else feel like this is a sign that the industry is going to collapse or is it just a bad issue i’d love to hear your thoughts

just finished reading the new batman series and im underwhelmed

imo the latest batman series is a total snooze fest. the artwork is pretty meh and the storyline is just rehashing old ideas. i mean whats up with batman still whining about his parents being dead like come on dude youre like 40 in comic book years. cant he just move on already tbh i loved the old batman runs by scott snyder and greg capullo but this new one just doesnt compare
