f/8 for portraits? smh why did I think that was a thing

so i took like 50 pics of my dog in the park last week trying to get that "cinematic" look right?? used f/8 thinking higher numbers = blurrier background but bruh the trees behind him are razor sharp and his face is just… there??

tried to salvage it with editing but nope the mess stays. someone explain aperture to me again? i thought the numbers worked opposite of how they actually do??

(also why does my 50mm lens feel like a firehose when i try to frame closeups ugh)
