Help: Why does my Sony A7R IV lose focus on sunrise peaks in the Himalayas?
Been pushing the A7R IV to its limits on a two‑day trek through the Khumbu. Warmup at 8,000 m, then sunrise at 8,350 m. My focus motor whines, then just skips. Same settings every day—AF‑C, 24‑70 mm f/2.8, ISO 100, 1/125 s. No firmware updates.
Result: blurry orange‑tinged spires, total garbage despite perfect weather. Tried turning on Eye‑AF, turned off AF‑C, even manual focus on 200 mm, still can’t lock the subject when it’s only a line against the sky.
I know the spec says 15‑stop dynamic range, but the real‑world contrast in that light kills the sensor. And my 2× teleconverter adds half a stop of extra tilt—maybe that’s it?
Any pro tips? Is this a known bug with the high‑altitude temperature drop, or am I just mis‑configuring? Need some validation here because it feels like the camera’s cheating me.
