How to avoid over-reliance on camera presets and develop a personal photography style?

I've been noticing that a lot of my photos start to look like they're straight out of a camera preset. I want to develop my own style but I'm not sure where to start. I've been experimenting with different editing techniques but I feel like I'm just mimicking what others are doing. Has anyone else struggled with this? What are some common mistakes to avoid when trying to develop a personal photography style?
