I mixed up bourbon for scotch at a fancy dinner??

I went into this new French bistro last night, eyes on the menu, ready to brag about my whiskey knowledge. I ordered the "House Reserve" that I thought was a bourbon—big, bold, the kind I love. Turns out it was a neat single‑maltt scotch. The sommelier explained that it was the pairing for the truffle risotto, not a cocktail. I felt like a fool standing there with my glass half‑full and the server laughing.

I made a rookie mistake by assuming the name alone meant it was bourbon. The real lesson? Menus are tricky, and chefs like to play with expectations. Has anyone else accidentally ordered the wrong whiskey at a fine dining spot? What did the chef do? And honestly, who else feels a little embarrassed when the wrong drink shows up on the table?

I'm curious to hear your stories.
