Loki's true role in Norse mythology

I've been delving into the complexities of Norse mythology and I'm having trouble reconciling the different portrayals of Loki. On one hand, he's often depicted as a trickster figure, responsible for the death of Baldur and chaos in the gods' realm. Yet, in some accounts, he's also shown to be a loyal companion to the gods, particularly Odin. What's striking to me is the contrast between the Loki of the Poetic Edda and the Loki of the Prose Edda - the former seems more nuanced, while the latter is downright malevolent. I'm curious to know how others interpret Loki's character and his place within the Norse pantheon. Is he a symbol of chaos, a force of nature, or something more complex? The more I read, the more I feel like I'm only scratching the surface of this enigmatic figure.
