Mirror Neurons: Primates vs Rodents – Why the Assumption of Superior Complexity??
I see this same tired meme circulating again, comparing mirror neuron function in primates to rodents without acknowledging the critical gap in behavioral study methodology ???
Sure, human fMRI data shows elaborate mirror activity during social mimicry, but that doesn't inherently mean primate or rodent neurons lack comparable complexity. We force them to perform lab-tailored versions of empathy... then act surprised when we don't get identical outputs from a squirrel monkey.
Someone must have addressed the fundamental flaws in cross-species mirror neuron analysis by now? If so, cite the paper that finally called this bias out in the field.
Or do we all secretly love clinging to vague narratives about 'simpler lower animal' brains because our stats make our careers more fundable???
