Robotic Rock Picker Blunder – Who Else Has Had a Lab Fail?
So I spent three weeks programming a field robotics prototype to identify and collect basalt samples based on density algorithms. Sounds simple, right? Turns out my code couldn’t differentiate between a fist-sized gabbro and a suspiciously smooth cinder block. The robot spent an hour in the field last week, nobly ‘curating’ a collection of construction debris it sent back to the lab. My supervisor nearly choked on their coffee when they saw the data. I’m still cringing. But hey, at least the 40Ar/39Ar dating team had a good laugh. How do you all avoid these facepalms when integrating automation into fieldwork? I swear the machine looked judgmental when it picked that pink insulation foam over an actual amphibolite.
