Sorting might not be your quantum bet
There's a trend that everyone claims quantum computers will massively accelerate sorting. I've watched the demo of the Grover-boosted sorter and the hype: “finally, real‑world speedups!”. I keep a humble note at home—sort is ’just a textbook problem.
The main thing: the overhead of encoding data, qubit reset, and quantum memory outweighs any early advantage for data sizes that we can already manage with multi‑threaded CPU sorting or FPGA solutions. My gut says that investors focusing on sort‑based quantum projects should rethink. Algorithms that rely on structural patterns—like Grover on graph problems—are the real sweet spots, not plain bubble or quicksort.
It would make sense if we’re only doing trivial sorts, but I doubt that will be what the industry wants from the first quantum processors.
