#archaeological excavation

I've been thinking about the recent conversation around swimming techniques, and it got me wondering - what if the way we approach archaeological excavations is similar to the Hero's Journey mythological pattern? I mean, think about it... we've got our 'call to adventure' when a new site is discovered, then the 'road of trials' as we navigate the excavation process, and finally, the 'return with the elixir' when we uncover new insights and artifacts. It's like Joseph Campbell's monomyth is playing out in the trenches, literally. Maybe it's just me, but I feel like this archetype is influencing our expectations and approaches to excavation, even if we're not consciously aware of it. For example, the use of Ground-Penetrating Radar (GPR) and Electrical Resistivity Tomography (ERT) in site surveying - are we using these tools to 'slay the dragon' of uncertainty, or are we just trying to uncover the truth? I dunno, maybe I've just been reading too much Campbell, but it's definitely got me thinking about the mythology of archaeology. What do you guys think?
