Why every syllabus feels like a vague promise
I keep noticing that most course syllabi read like a marketing flyer. They list topics, a handful of textbook chapters, and a vague "assessment will be based on participation and exams" line. What they don't say is how many hours of reading are expected outside class, how much weight each assignment really carries, or what the grading curve looks like. The result is a constant guessing game for students: do I need to start the reading a week early, or can I skim the night before? Professors seem to assume we can infer the workload from the bullet points, but the reality is a lot of wasted time trying to reverse‑engineer the hidden expectations. I wish someone would standardize the level of detail in syllabi so we stop treating them as cryptic riddles and start using them as actual roadmaps.
