Why does using HoloLens 2 AR fish finder ruin traditional casting skill?

I switched to a HoloLens 2 with the FishScope Pro overlay last month, hoping the real‑time Lidar depth mapping and SLAM‑based water surface model would give me an edge. Instead I’m missing more bites than ever.

  • The holographic depth grid (0.5 m resolution) forces me to focus on the AR panel rather than the line tension. My natural feel for the drag is gone.
  • Vuzix M400’s “Mediated Reality” mode adds a false sense of certainty; the projected bite indicator lags by ~120 ms on the Snapdragon 845 chipset, so I react too late.
  • The AR‑enhanced sonar (frequency 200 kHz, model SR‑AR‑200) creates echo‑noise that masks subtle surface disturbances that seasoned anglers rely on.

I’ve tried turning off the bite‑alert and just using the 3‑D water‑column view, but the constant visual clutter still distracts. Anyone else notice that AR actually degrades the tactile feedback loop we’ve built over decades? Is the trade‑off ever worth it, or are we just turning a skill‑based sport into a gadget‑driven hobby??

I’m considering ditching the headset and going back to a classic analog depth finder. Thoughts?
