How does a thick rug change my perception of sibilant consonants in everyday speech?

Installed a 10mm wool rug in the living room last night. The carpet deadened the high‑frequency hiss of the TV dialogue – the [s] and [ʃ] sounds almost vanished. It reminded me of the phonological concept of allophonic variation: the same phoneme can surface differently depending on acoustic environment. In this case the rug acts like a low‑pass filter, turning the alveolar fricative into something closer to a devoiced plosive. Strange that a décor choice can literally reshape the phonetic inventory of my apartment.

Anyone else notice language shifting when they change floor covering? Not looking for advice, just sharing the odd cross‑disciplinary observation.
