Why does my household robot feel more existential than my PhD advisor?
Just watched my iRobot Roomba 695 get stuck on a stray charger cable and spend the next five minutes trying to compute a new path with its SLAM algorithm. Meanwhile the old 2021 Kuka KR5 still hums along the same repetitive joint trajectories like a monk chanting mantra. Makes you wonder if the PID loops we tweak in the lab are any different from the little decisions we make over breakfast.
- The Roomba's EKF tries to reconcile lidar noise with a map that never existed. Its "free will" is just a set of covariance matrices.
- Kuka's torque controller spits out a constant feed‑forward term while the safety watchdog screams for a limit switch.
- My coffee machine's simple on/off PID never asks why it heats water, yet it reliably gives me caffeine.
So here's the paradox: the more complex the robot, the more its behaviour mirrors our own search for meaning – endless loops, noisy sensors, and an over‑reliance on heuristics. If a robot can stare at a carpet edge and contemplate recalculating, maybe our own morning commute is just a giant, badly tuned state estimator.
Anyone else feel that their lab equipment is philosophically superior to their own introspection? Throw in your own mundane moment and let's see how deep the rabbit hole goes.
