When a study turns out to be a dead end
I spent the last two weeks trying to replicate that famous memory experiment from the 80s. I set up the exact conditions, printed the same stimuli, and even followed the protocol step by step. When the data finally came in, it was a mess—no significant difference, no clear pattern. I kept checking my notes, re-running the analysis, and still nothing. The frustration hit hard because I felt like I was wasting my time and, honestly, my confidence in the research process. On the bright side, it taught me that even well-established studies can be fragile and that replication is a real challenge. Anyone else feel like they’re chasing ghosts in the lab? How do you keep your motivation when the numbers just don’t cooperate?
