Why My Tenor Section Feels Like a Fungal Colony
There’s something about the way overlapping harmonies resolve in our choir that reminds me of spores spreading across a damp basement. Not in a poetic sense—literally. Our rehearsal space has this weird acoustic quirk where certain vowel sounds (looking at you, ‘ahhh’ in F major) bounce off the cinderblock walls like mycelium tendrils, multiplying until the whole room hums with unintended dissonance.
Our director insists it’s ‘textural depth,’ but I’m 70% sure it’s just the high tenors fighting to be heard over the bass section’s vibrato. Last week, I swear I felt a low-G rumble in my molars during the finale. It’s not terrible, just… persistent. Like that one mushroom that grows back every spring no matter how many times you scrape it off the tree trunk.
Has anyone else dealt with vocal ‘echo chambers’ in their performance spaces? I’m curious if singers in fungal cultivation labs have better soundproofing.
