Why does my Osprey Atmos AG 65 hip‑belt latch slip at ~3000 m altitude??
I'm on a three‑day Sierra trek (June 2026) and at about 3000 m the hip‑belt latch on my Osprey Atmos AG 65 keeps popping open It was fine at lower elevations, but now the latch teeth feel loose and the release button clicks without me touching it.
- Backpack: Osprey Atmos AG 65, AT‑2020 version, black
- Latch: 23‑mm stainless steel snap, model code HBL‑23
- Conditions: 10‑15 °C night, 45 % humidity, moderate wind
- Gear load: 28 kg (water, food, 12‑L shelter, 2‑kg stove)
I tightened the screw on the latch with a hex key (size 2.5 mm) – no change. Re‑installed the harness straps, but the release still clicks on its own every few minutes.
Has anyone seen a similar altitude‑related latch failure? Is this a known weakness in the AT‑2020 series, or am I missing a maintenance step? Any workarounds that don't require sending it back to Osprey?
