I keep noticing how often we hear the Roman Empire described as a beacon of civilization, spreading law, order, and culture to the "barbarians" beyond its borders. Maybe I'm being overly critical, but doesn't that narrative feel a bit selective? The same empire was built on conquest, slavery, and brutal suppression of dissent. And yet textbooks and popular media love to celebrate its roads, architecture, and "legal" legacy while glossing over the darker side.\n\nI'm curious: why does this glorified image persist so strongly in modern discourse?
