CMIP6 vs CMIP5: Why CMIP6 still overestimates Arctic amplification

Alright, let's cut the fluff. Everyone loves to hail CMIP6 as the next big thing, but the data says otherwise, especially up north.

Resolution & Grid

  • CMIP6 runs (e.g., CESM2, MPI-ESM1.2) boast ~1° grids, CMIP5 was ~2°. In theory that should sharpen the temperature gradient, but the higher resolution just amplifies the model's built‑in bias in sea‑ice albedo feedback.

Equilibrium Climate Sensitivity (ECS)

  • CMIP6 median ECS ~3.5 K, CMIP5 ~3.0 K. That 0.5 K bump translates to ~15 % more warming in the Arctic per CO₂ doubling. Observations still hover around 2.5 K ECS, so CMIP6 is clearly overshooting.

Aerosol Forcing

  • CMIP6 adopts a much weaker indirect aerosol effect (≈‑0.5 W m⁻²) compared to CMIP5 (≈‑1.2 W m⁻²). Less cooling from aerosols means the net radiative imbalance is higher, again pushing Arctic temps up.

Sea‑Ice Thickness Parameterisation

  • Both suites use the same basic thermodynamic scheme, but CMIP6 tweaks the melt‑pond albedo to 0.6 from 0.5. That sounds minor, yet it boosts melt rates by ~20 % in the model, inflating summer sea‑ice loss.

Bottom line CMIP6 isn’t a miracle upgrade; it’s a more aggressive version of the same flawed physics. If you’re hunting realistic Arctic projections, stick with the lower‑bias CMIP5 ensembles or apply bias‑correction to CMIP6 outputs.

Your move Anyone got a robust bias‑correction method that actually works for the Arctic? Or are we just stuck with over‑cooked projections forever?

Looking for reliable sources on regional climate feedbacks – any suggestions?

I’ve been trying to get a clearer picture of how regional climate feedbacks, especially land‑surface and cloud interactions, are quantified in the literature. My background is a bit limited, so I’m hoping for recommendations that are approachable yet thorough – maybe review papers, textbooks, or even a handful of key studies that people actually use in their own work. 📚

If you could point me toward resources that explain the methods without assuming too much prior knowledge, that would be amazing. Also, any notes on how these feedbacks are represented in the newest generation of CMIP models would be really helpful.

Thanks in advance for any guidance you can share! ??

Is it better to use a lot of gestures or keep hands still when speaking?

I've been preparing for a talk on a technical topic. I keep hearing conflicting advice. Some say gestures help keep the audience engaged, others say too much movement is distracting. I can't decide. What do you think? Does the audience prefer more gesturing or a more restrained style? Also, does the subject matter affect this? I'm looking for real-world experience.

Do you guys always use a tripod for astrophotography?

I've been getting into astrophotography lately and I was wondering if I'm the only one who sometimes skips using a tripod I know it's pretty essential for getting clear shots, but sometimes I'm just out and about with my camera and I see a great shot and I don't have my tripod with me. So I just Try to make do without it. Has anyone else ever done this? Do you find that it affects the quality of your photos too much? I've been experimentation with different techniques to try and get decent shots without a tripod, like using a faster shutter speed or a higher iso. But I'd love to hear from you guys and see what you think.

Normal to review budget weekly?

I've been doing this for a while now, but I was wondering if anyone else reviews their budget on a weekly basis. I know some people do it monthly, but I like to stay on top of my spending. It's not like I'm obsessed or anything, I just think it helps me make better financial decisions. Anyone else do this? Is it overkill or is it pretty standard?

How to style oversized blazers without looking sloppy?

I’ve been trying to wear oversized blazers for a while now, but every time I pair them with jeans or trousers they end up looking baggy and unkempt. I’ve tried tucking in shirts, adding belts, even rolling sleeves, but nothing seems to give a clean silhouette. Maybe I’m missing a simple trick or a specific fit tip? Any suggestions would be appreciated 😊

Recommendations for climate modeling software

I've been diving into some research on climate modeling and I'm looking for some recommendations on software to use. I've heard of a few different options, but I'd like to get some input from people who have actually used them. What are some of the most effective tools out there for running climate models? I'm particularly interested in software that can handle complex scenarios and provide detailed output. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Optimizing Smartphone Battery Life for Climate Monitoring Apps

I've been experimenting with using my smartphone to monitor climate patterns, and one thing that's become clear is that battery life is a major concern. When you're running apps like Dark Sky or Weather Underground, which rely on constant location tracking and data updates, your battery can drain pretty quickly. I've found that using a phone like the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra, with its large 5000mAh battery, helps to mitigate this issue. However, even with a big battery, it's still possible to run out of juice if you're not careful. To optimize battery life, I've started using a few different strategies. First, I make sure to turn off location tracking when I'm not actively using the app. I also try to keep my screen brightness turned down, which can make a big difference. Additionally, I've started using a portable battery pack, like the Anker PowerCore 20000, to give my phone a boost when I'm out in the field. One thing I'm still trying to figure out is how to optimize my phone's settings for climate monitoring. For example, should I be using a low-power mode, or is that going to interfere with the accuracy of my readings? I've also heard that some phones have a 'high-precision' location tracking mode that can be more accurate, but also more battery-intensive. Has anyone else had experience with this? What strategies do you use to optimize your smartphone's battery life for climate monitoring?

Slide deck froze mid-presentation... again

So there I was, halfway through a talk, and the laptop just decides to freeze. Not a crash, just unresponsive. Had to wing it for 10 minutes while IT sorted it. Frustrating because the visuals were key. Any other horror stories? How do you handle tech fails gracefully?

Weather station woes in remote areas?

Quick thought: how often do we consider the maintenance headaches of climate sensors in hard-to-reach zones? I’m talking about places where a broken thermometer in the Arctic or a rainforest sensor swallowed by vines adds weeks to repair time. My fieldwork buddy had a station in Patagonia go dark for months—turned out a fox chewed through the wiring. these small failures compound data gaps faster than most realize. Anyone else track similar issues? What’s the most creative fix you’ve seen for remote equipment reliability?

Looking for a good astrology book for beginners

I've been getting into astrology lately and I'm looking for some reading material. I've heard there are some great books out there that can help me understand the basics. I've tried looking online but there are so many options. Has anyone read any good astrology books for beginners? I'm looking for something that explains the zodiac signs, planets, and houses in a way that's easy to understand.

Which speaking technique do you find most effective for climate science talks?

Running a quick poll on the most useful speaking techniques for climate science presentations.

Options

  • A) 5‑Second Rule (brief intro, hook the audience in 5 seconds)
  • B) 3‑Second Rule (even faster hook, ideal for social media clips)
  • C) Feynman Technique (explain the concept as if to a child)
  • D) Storytelling with climate narratives (use a narrative arc to frame data)
  • E) Data‑Driven Slides with minimal text (focus on visuals, let the data speak)

Vote by commenting the letter of your choice and drop a line on why it works for you. Looking forward to the insights!

Fishing spots affected by rising sea temps?

I've been noticing some changes in the fishing spots I usually visit... maybe it's just me but it seems like the fish are moving to deeper waters. I feel like this could be related to the rising sea temperatures?? Is anyone else experiencing this? Maybe we can discuss some strategies for adapting to these changes... or maybe I'm just overthinking it?

why are sm entertainment's 2024 world tour carbon footprints ignored in climate reports

so i saw the latest hype about the next-gen k‑pop "neon wave" tour (aka sm 2024 global launch) apparently they're bragging about 25,000 seats, 18 city stops, and some fancy "eco‑stage" that recycles plastic newsflash: the jet charter fleet they use burns like 12,000 t CO2eq per leg that's more than a small European country's annual emissions

  • each arena gets a custom LED wall (model xb-3400) that sucks 2‑3 MW per night - fans are told to "offset your tickets" but the official offsets are the same cheap reforestation projects sm used in 2019 - the so‑called "green backstage" is basically a bamboo mat on a concrete floor – zero impact i get that music industry loves buzzwords, but when the climate community pretends this is "sustainable entertainment" we're just buying tickets to a carbon‑vomit show the real issue: no one holding sm accountable in any climate accounting framework why is the climate discourse so comfy ignoring pop culture megaprojects?

anyone else rolling their eyes at the "green" press releases or am i the only one who sees the sm tour as a climate PR stunt?

Does increased terrestrial carbon sequestration offset ocean acidification?

I've been pondering the intersection of carbon capture and ocean health. It feels like we're making progress on terrestrial carbon sequestration, but I'm not sure if that's enough to counteredact the ongoing issue of ocean acidification 🌟. Maybe someone can shed some light on this - are there any recent studies that explore the relationship between these two phenomena? I've been looking into the role of phytoplankton in the global carbon cycle, and I'm curious to know if their impact could be leveraged to enhance oceanic carbon sequestration 🌿

What is the general consensus on the actual climate impact of “sustainable” fast‑fashion labels?

The term “sustainable” has become a marketing buzzword for countless fast‑fashion brands. Yet the climate community remains divided on whether these claims hold up under rigorous life‑cycle assessment (LCA). Do most experts believe that the modest material shifts—e.g., a portion of recycled polyester or Tencel blends—significantly reduce CO₂ emissions, or are they merely greenwashing maneuvers that obscure the core issue of overproduction?

Specifically, I am looking for a concise, community‑wide summary:

  1. How credible are publicly available LCA data from brands such as H&M Conscious, Zara Join Life, and Patagonia’s recycled line?
  2. Are the reductions (often quoted as 10‑30 % lower emissions) statistically meaningful when compared to a baseline of a fully circular, zero‑waste supply chain?
  3. Do leading climate scientists view these incremental gains as a legitimate mitigation pathway, or do they consider them a distraction from systemic change?

I expect rigorous citations, not vague affirmations. If the consensus leans toward skepticism, please explain which methodological flaws are most commonly cited. If the consensus is more optimistic, detail the assumptions that make those optimistic scenarios plausible.

Bottom line: does the fashion industry’s “sustainability” narrative genuinely advance climate goals, or is it a convenient veneer for continued mass consumption?
