Do most hobbyists log surface temps every hour?

i've been tracking surface temps at my backyard station since last summer. i log every hour, even when nothing's happening. is that overkill? do other amateurs stick to hourly readings or just during events? wondering if i'm wasting time.

Why do forecasts always overdo the rain??

Okay, so I live in a place where the weather’s basically a mood... and the forecasts are always so dramatic. Like, yesterday they were going on about a 'high chance of thunderstorms' and 'dangerous lightning'? Total overkill. I prepped for a disaster, hauled in the patio stuff, and what actually happened? A few drizzle drops and a cloud that looked like a sad cotton ball. Where’s the accountability here???

It’s not even about being right or wrong—it’s about the theatrics. I get it, models are imperfect, but when you hype up a Category 3 hurricane and it turns out to be a soggy Tuesday, people lose trust. Fast. Are we just gonna let forecasters run wild with their drama queens’ hats on? Or is there a way to call them out without getting canceled for being a 'weather denier'...? I’m dying to hear your takes. Let’s hash this out.

urban planning frustration

I just got out of a meeting with our city's planning committee and I'm so frustrated... they're still not listening to our concerns about the new development project downtown. I feel like we've been saying the same things for months now - more green spaces, better public transportation, affordable housing... but it's all just falling on deaf ears?? I'm starting to think they're more interested in pleasing the developers than actually creating a livable community. Does anyone else have experience with this kind of thing??

Does Elevation Really Reduce Tornado Risk?

I've been going back and forth on this - does elevation really decrease tornado risk? I know we get fewer tornadoes at higher elevations, but is it because of elevation or just because we're farther from the usual tornado corridors? I've seen some studies saying elevation is a factor, but then I think about places like Denver or Boulder that still get hit sometimes. Maybe it's more about local geography than just sea level? I'd love to hear some thoughts or sources on this.

Help? Why do so lithe users apply 00z ERA5 regridd for WSP WPS 1523 simulations?

tbh, 00z data just gets you caught cold with overnight troughs rn. all these clowns in the group still using static nudging in WPS 0304? imo, switch to ensemble regridding using wrf_var from the repo on Github (but don't @ me)

like jisus, if you run the GDAS assim as a 4x4 node then your 500hpa divergence totally falls out. i saw my WPS 9836 melt when i tried using NEMS without a boundary condition from NCEP lol

i swear someone here has to use the FDDA coupling properly. is everyones WSP grid still using a 9pt stencil for domain masking or just me getting rekt trying to make sense of this jesus-forsaken namelist code

if anyone uses GDAP with the CMC model just to bypass all that GDZ shite im literally holding down and trying not to scream into pillows. like, who else had their RAP analysis totally bot when you tried adding the 30min spin-up with GDZ grid

does 1523 even run on 16g ram systems anymore? the last time me trying to fire that up it just flat-out refuses to open like someone locked that binary. i mean, why are people even using GDAP? switch to GDOS for real data assim i swear it works better if you set the conv_diff parameter just like im not saying i tried

and before anyone goes and smacks me for this - yes yes, i know you're meant to validate your data on 8542 layer. who has the time though. 1 hour for setup = 10 hour run of something that will crash at day 5 no one can explain because the GDAP data is jacked

Was your city designed for a world before NWS Doppler radars?

Remember when street drainage systems were mapped using only 24-hour rain gauges instead of NOAA's real-time radar arrays? Cities built their catch basins for stormwater in the era before QPF tools predicted rainfall volume, cell movement, and microclimate pockets within an inch. We used to engineer infrastructure assuming linear rainfall accumulation instead of convective bursts that overload pipes overnight. Should urban design today be retrograding those obsolete assumptions as high-resolution weather modeling evolves faster than concrete? Maybe someone built their hometown by the books before radar mosaics—let them take over a podium for defending 1864's rain gauge stats over AI-predicted stormwater surges.

Bonus question: When your zoning board approved development based on 100-year flood plains calculated pre-PRISM gridded data, were they accidentally future-proofing against the delusional?
