help: why do origami artists still use 80gsm paper when 100gsm is cheaper and supposedly better for folding?

tbh, i've been folding origami for a while now and i've always wondered why most artists still swear by 80gsm paper. i mean, i get that it's traditional and all, but isn't 100gsm supposed to be stronger and more durable? i've tried folding with both and honestly, i don't notice a huge difference rn. maybe it's just me, but i feel like 100gsm is overkill for most designs. has anyone else noticed this or am i just being a noob? lol

Finally got my budget to stick for a month

I stopped buying the daily latte Set up a $300 auto-transfer to a high-yield account. No excuses, just a cold spreadsheet. Ended the month $250 ahead of target. Feels like finding a perfect crease on a paper crane – rare but satisfying.

Do you guys precrease your models?

I've been folding for a few years now and I've gotten into the habit of precreasing all my models before I start folding. It saves me a ton of time and helps me avoid mistakes. But I was wondering if this is something that everyone does or if I'm just being weird. I mean, some models are pretty complex and it seems like precreasing would be a must, but maybe I'm just overprepared. Anyone else out there precrease their models or am I just being extra cautious? I'd love to hear about your folding habits and see if I'm the only one who does this.

ar frustration

so i was trying to create this origami-inspired ar experience and i got stuck on the lighting. it's crazy how something so simple can be so hard to get right. i've been reading about ar for a while now and i thought i had a good grasp on it, but i guess not. anyone else have trouble with lighting in ar? i feel like it's an area that's still really underdeveloped.

questioning the myth of golden hour

I've been thinking a lot about photography lately and I have to say, I'm getting a bit tired of everyone saying that golden hour is the best time to shoot. Don't get me wrong, it can be beautiful, but is it really that much better than other times of day? I've taken some of my favorite photos during overcast skies or even at night. There's something about the soft, diffused light that I just love. And lets be real, sometimes golden hour can be a bit... cliché. I mean, how many photos of sunsets or warmly lit cities can we see before they all start to blend together? I'm not saying it's not a great time to shoot, but I think we need to start exploring other times of day and seeing what kind of unique perspectives we can capture. Anyone else feel like I'm onto something here or am I just being contrarian?

rulers are a waste of time in origami

rulers are a waste of time in origami tbh i just fold with my fingers and the result looks fine no need to trim edges with a ruler its just a gimmick people love to preach precision but for most of us the art is about the fold not the edge

Help: 3:5 scaling on the Senkawa 117‑p dragon throws off the tassel valley fold

Been tweaking a Senkawa 117‑p dragon (the one with the twin‑tail tassels) all night. Trying a 3:5 scale on 120×200mm Saito #3 paper, and the valley fold at the tassel base just wonky – pops open when I flatten the rear wing.

What I'm seeing:

  • Initial squash fold on the wing matches the diagram, but after the first squash‑push the adjacent valley at the tassel root creates a micro‑crack.
  • The 0.6mm pre‑crease I scored with a bone folder is barely visible on the 30gsm paper, so the paper creases rather than bends.
  • When I dry‑press the tail for a few seconds the pop recurs.

What I've tried:

  1. Double‑scoring the tassel valley (lightly on both sides) – nothing.
  2. Using a heavier 48gsm Sato sheet – the pop goes away but the whole model feels stiff.
  3. Adjusting the mountain‑fold angle by 2° on the rear wing – still pops at the tassel.

Anyone hit this exact issue? Any tips for reinforcing that valley without ruining the delicate curl on the tails? I'm open to a bit of glue on the inside or swapping the crease‑line orientation, but keep it light. Feedback appreciated – especially if you've kept that fold tight on a 1:1 scale.

why does ultra thin rice paper tear at the mountain fold in a classic crane?

so i was trying that old crane model on some rice paper (like 30gsm) tbh thought it would be smoother lol but the mountain fold just snaps like a bike chain under tension??

anyone else seen the paper fibre actually split instead of creasing?? seems like the grain direction is fighting the fold, kinda like a chain link catching on a gear teeth...

any tips on pre‑creasing or using a backing sheet?? or should i just ditch rice paper for this move?? im low key annoyed rn

weird folding quirks

I was folding a crane the other day and i got to thinking about how every time i make one it starts out all tight and neat but by the time i'm halfway through its like my folds just lose their crispiness. is this just me? anyone else notice that some papers seem to hold a fold better than others? i mean i know its supposed to be about the technique and all but some papers honestly feel like they're working against me. i'm using this pretty standard kami right now and it's alright but i remember using some really cheap paper once and it was almost impossible to get a clean fold. anyone tried that new moyori paper? heard its really good for folding

Help: My 3D-01 origami model cuts meal prep waste by 15%

just finished the 3D-01 origami kit and wow, it’s a game changer for meal prep lol

  • used 5mm thick A4, 2‑step crease pattern, hinge technique, inverted‑V fold
  • built a 10x10 cm container that holds leftover veggies, keeps them fresh 24h
  • cut waste by 15% because i can store more in the same space
  • next step: design a modular stackable set for the fridge

anyone else tried folding a food‑storage box? i’d love tips on material tweaks or fold speed hacks

How do you solve that 45 degree twist when you're trying to make a 'Hyakuten' but the paper slips...??

so i've been making kawasaki asa no hana and i'm stuck at that 45 angle twist but i've tried everything...??? i keep thinking i did that 'shakueh' wrong (where you tuck in 5 layers not six) but when i check the diagrams again?? no wait... the diagrams don't explain that extra corner that pokes out if you don't do it just right?? it's like some invisible force pulls the top right corner into oblivion the way it's creased idk maybe i need lighter paper?? or maybe this is an edge case they don't talk about?? who else has tried to do a 88888 layer hyakuten and gotten frustrated with the angle? (no just me???) 😓

Why my last sparring session felt like a paper crane gone wrong

The drill we did today—basic footwork combined with a low kick—was supposed to be simple, but I kept overthinking every step. My balance was off, and I ended up stepping into my partner's range more than once. Turns out my stance collapses when I try to keep the "perfect line" like folding a perfect origami. Anyone else notice that trying to be flawless actually makes you slower? I tried to correct it by tightening my core, but that just made my breathing shallow. Ended up gasping for air after the third round. My coach said I need to accept the imperfections, just like a paper fold that isn’t perfectly crisp. So I'm asking: how do you train to keep technique clean without freezing up? Do you deliberately practice sloppy reps, or focus on slow, controlled movements until they become second nature? I’m tired of feeling like a crumpled sheet every time I step onto the mat...
