Got the right mineral ID on my first field test – finally

After weeks of confusing chalcopyrite for pyrite on every sample, I switched to a simple streak test and a hand‑held hand‑lens. One scratch on unglazed porcelain, a quick check of color and hardness, and the difference shouted itself. The first time I correctly identified a sulfide in the creek without consulting the lab, I actually felt a surge of competence. Anyone else still fighting the same misidentifications, or am I just lucky this time??

I tried the old trick of heating a crystal on a bunsen burner to see the reaction—completely unnecessary, but it reassured me the sample really is copper‑rich. If anyone has a faster way to confirm a sulfide in the field, feel free to drop it. Otherwise, enjoy my tiny victory; it's about time I stopped mixing up dull metallic flakes with bright brass‑like ones.
