Just cracked the code on a linguistic pet peeve
I've been listening to a bunch of podcasts on language and linguistics lately, and I just figured out why one particular phrase has been bugging me. It's the way some podcasters use the word 'decimate' to mean 'completely destroy' when in fact it originally meant to kill one in ten. I know it's a minor thing, but it's been driving me crazy. Now that I've got it off my chest, I'm curious - what are some linguistic errors that bother you guys? Are there any podcasts that do a good job of exploring language and linguistics?
