Rotary vs Coil tattoo machines for detailed soccer crest work – which yields sharper linework?

Been testing a few rigs on the new FC Barcelona crest and need a straight answer.

  1. Bishop Rotary 2.0 (model R-120) – smooth stroke, 0.8mm needle travel, 12‑15V range. Line consistency is decent but the torque drops when you hit the thicker shading zones of the crest. The motor hum is low, so you can work longer without fatigue.
  2. Cheyenne Hawk Pen (model CP‑300) – essentially a coil‑style pen with 2‑coil stack, 0.6mm travel, 9‑13V. The punch is tighter, giving crisper outlines on the tiny star and laurel details. However the coil buzz can vibrate the skin, making it harder to keep the line steady on curved sections.
  3. Ink flow & needle grouping – Rotary tends to push more ink per stroke, which is good for the gradient on the blue stripe but can cause blow‑outs on the thin gold line. Coil machines let you dial the feed with a tighter needle grouping (e.g., 3‑round 14) for that razor‑thin gold edge.
  4. Power supply stability – I ran both off a V4+ with a 0.5A limiter. The rotary held voltage better under load; the coil spiked when I switched from line to fill, which forced me to adjust the foot pedal constantly.
  5. Ergonomics – The rotary’s weight is 180g, the coil pen is 210g. Over a 2‑hour session the extra heft shows up in hand fatigue, especially when you’re trying to keep the crest perfectly centered.

Bottom line: If you prioritize ultra‑fine line fidelity on the crest’s intricate gold filigree, the Cheyenne coil pen wins, provided you can manage the buzz. For overall speed and less hand strain when filling the larger blue field, the Bishop rotary is the pragmatic choice.

Anyone else tried the newer Dragonfly 3‑coil (model DF‑330) on a crest? Curious if it bridges the gap.
