social hierarchies in group settings

i've been thinking about how people interacts with each other in groups... like when you're out with friends or at a party. it's weird how quickly a pecking order forms. someone's always running the show, deciding what music to play or what game to play. and then there's the person who's trying too hard to fit in... what's up with that?? is it just human nature or something more nuanced going on here... do people really crave that kind of structure even in casual settings?
