just finished a 2 hour calculus assignment and the last problem was a total brain‑kill, tbh i keep circling back to the same step and no luck lol i think the teacher might have misprinted the integral limits or something rn i just want to finish and go home

As a teacher with 12 years in the trenches, I've watched the same pattern repeat: students who dutifully tackle piles of worksheets often lag behind peers who skip them The 2015 PISA data shows no clear link between daily homework hours and higher reading or math scores. In my own experiment, I dropped homework for a semester and saw no grade drop—engagement actually spiked.

The assumption that more hours equals better learning comes from an outdated, rote‑repetition model, not modern cognition. Spaced repetition and retrieval practice matter, yet homework rarely employs these strategies; it turns into busywork.

If we want deeper understanding, we should swap worksheets for guided reflection or project work—activities that align with Bloom's taxonomy. Students who write brief reflections after lessons retain about 30% more information than those who grind through drills.

So why do we still do this? It feels like a relic that kills curiosity, not a tool for learning.
