Help: Choosing the best macro lens for capturing cat whiskers in natural light

I've been shooting my cat Luna for a while, but the photos look a bit flat. I want sharper, more detailed shots, especially of her whiskers and eyes. I'm currently using a Nikon D850 with a 70‑200mm f/2.8, but I’m thinking about switching to a macro lens.

Which lens would give the best results for indoor low‑light cat photography? I’m looking at the following options:

  • Nikon AF‑S Micro Nikkor 105mm f/2.8G IF‑ED
  • Sony FE 90mm f/2.8 Macro
  • 50mm f/1.8 (prime, good for low light)

Also, any tips on tripod setup, lighting, or post‑processing would be great. I’m especially curious about:

  • Ideal aperture for depth of field when shooting close to a cat’s face
  • Best tripod head for steady shots
  • Quick‑edit workflow for enhancing whisker detail

Thanks in advance for your suggestions! 🐾

Why is recursion so unstable with Python generators? ???

Building a DFS parser for config files... using recursion + yielding states. The base case always triggers but the final closure doesn't capture terminal values unless I force a non-generator wrapper?? How to manage this without losing on-demand evaluation benefits? Repro code here:

Why does my Razer M2Whisker v2 feed stutter when my Siamese reaches 48.7 dB purr volume?

Been poking at the M2Whisker setup for three weeks. Every time Luma hits the 48‑50 dB range (she's officially a ‘purr turbine’), the feed drops frames and the HUD shows Error 42: “Fur‑induced overload”.\n\n- Firmware 1.3.4 reports “Sensor saturation – adjust gain”.\n- Cat model number: Siamese‑K2, born 2021, weight 4.3 lb.\n- My mount: 35 mm Gopro‑Lite on a Clawmark MkIII arm, angled 12° down.\n\nTried:\n* Lowering gain to 0.75 – marginal.\n* Adding a 2 mm Plexiglass filter – no change.\n* Swapping to a GenericCatCam 2000 – feed stays solid at any volume.\n\nConclusion: The Razer firmware likely uses a 48 dB threshold calibrated to a typical tabby, not a high‑pitched Siamese. Anyone cracked the gain curve or have a mod to buffer the purr spikes? Screenshots attached for reference.

Fishing hooks are a waste

I've been thinking about this lately... using hooks just seems like a cruel practice. What's the point of catching a fish just to release it with a holes in its mouth? It's not like it's going to survive anyway. And don't even get me started on barbed hooks... who thought that was a good idea? Are we really that incompetent as fishermen that we need to rely on inflicting pain to catch our prey? Maybe it's time to rethink our approach.

What food works best for a picky cat?

So my tabby is a total foodie but only eats the same bland stuff. I tried a few brands, but he still ignores them. Any suggestions for a brand or type that might entice him? I’m open to wet or dry, but it has to be something that keeps him healthy and not too pricey. Also, if anyone knows a brand that’s gentle on the stomach, that’d be a win. Thanks! 🐾

Career Switch at 30

I'm at a crossroads and I need some honest feedback. I've been working in marketing for about 5 years now, but I'm feeling really unfulfilled. I've been considering a career switch into something more stable, like finance or accounting. The problem is, I don't have any direct experience in those fields and I'm not sure if I'm too old to be starting over. I've heard people say that 30 is the new 20, but I'm not buying it. Has anyone else out there made a significant career change at this age? How did it work out for you? Was it worth the risk?

declawing's a bad idea

i'm gonna get hate for this but i think declawing cats is super inhumane. it's basically mutilation. my neighbor got it done and now her cat's all messed up. can't even defend itself. what's the point of having a cat if it can't even scratch?

finally got my cat to use the scratching post

I feel like I've been trying forever to get my cat to use the scratching post instead of the furniture. Maybe it was the new catnip I put on it, but she's been using it consistently for the past week now. I'm really relieved, my couch was getting destroyed 🙌

Do cats really prefer quiet spaces?

I've noticed my cat usually hides under the bed when I vacuum. Maybe it's just my cat, but I feel like cats in general don't like loud noises. I've set up a quiet room for my cat, and she seems to love it. Does anyone else do this? Do your cats have a favorite quiet spot?

Finally nailed a crisp sourdough crumb

Spent the night tweaking my starter ratio and bulk fermentation time. The dough rested at 78°F for 4 hours, then I folded it three times before shaping. Baked at 475°F for 20 minutes with steam, then dropped to 425°F. The crust is caramelized, the crumb open yet uniform, no gummy center. Turns out the key was a longer autolyse and a brief cold retard in the fridge. Any tips on improving the oven spring are welcome.

Finally figured out the best trail

I've been trying to get out for a hike more often, but the local trails have been killing me. Either they're too touristy or the routes aren't well marked. So I tried a new spot out on the edge of the preserves... and it actually worked out. Trails were clear, got some good distance, and solid views. Thing is, still waiting for spring to creep here already...

Dry food vs wet food: Which is better for dental health in indoor cats?

Dry food crunches teeth, reduces tartar. Wet food moistens, but doesn't clean. I prep meals in bulk; dry is easier to store. Wet needs fridge. For a 2‑year‑old, I lean dry for dental. Mix both if you want balanced diet. Thoughts?

Journalism's Blind Spot

Mainstream journalism often prioritizes sensationalism over nuanced reporting. This article I read recently highlights the problem. It's frustrating to see journalists sacrifice depth for clicks. Do we really need 'breaking news' alerts for every minor development??

cat lady fail

so i was trying to sculpt this cat figurine and i ended up with a blob that looks more like a failed science experiment than a feline. i mean i was going for a cute little ball of fluff but what i got was... this thing. it's like it's staring at me judging me for my lack of sculpting skills. anyway i just had to share my epic fail with you guys. maybe someone can give me some tips on how to not suck at sculpting
