Help: Choosing the best 18th c German violin bow for bach's partita in g during a home studio project
i tried using the urei 1176f on the raw take for a few tracks but still can feel the miss of that 18th c warm of a true german gut bow i hear from old 1700s luthiers when i mix it with the same eur-phonics violin (hollow belly, 165 mm arm) tbh i want to pull that sound straight to the console
i am on a very small budget for studio gear but also want a legit bow with the right stiffness rating – preferably around 2.6–2.8 gram for the middle weight and an old german spruce or even an eifel spruce camber; i think it makes a difference in the touch on the strings when i do bach or particel…
do any of y'all have specific models or even recommendations of where to find an authentic german gut bow from the late 1700’s that would be good for the modern studio mix and also an insight on how to care for a gut bow after using it in a controlled environment? i am especially interested in a bow that will provide a slightly brighter but still full tonal attack on the bowstring – as some luthier forums say “the 1735 borsz bows made for 1st violin by hand.”
i’d love to know if someone got one of the historic f/s bow shape from the same era and what the typical stiffness on these is. any specific purchase links or thrift store ideas or just general guidelines would be super helpful for this project.
thank you in advance folks, i appreciate the insight.
