Help: How do I use my 2023 Miller 12ft board to catch a dev job wave?

So here's the deal: I’m trying to catch a dev job wave but my board’s kinda old. I’ve got a Miller 12ft, 2023 model, 7.5m swell, 220°, 20 knots – the classic setup for a good day, but the job market feels like a 30‑foot reef.

I keep thinking: Positioning is everything. In surfing that means finding the sweet spot on the wave, in coding that’s finding the right project or role. I use terms like “take the right line,” “board wax,” “shaper’s touch,” but the dev crowd seems to think I’m talking about a surf shop.

What I need: a clear guide to translate my surf‑savvy into networking language.

  • Positioning: Just like a surfer lines up before a 7.5m swell, I need to line up my LinkedIn profile with the right keywords (React, Node, AWS).
  • Timing: The swell hits at 220°, so I should time my outreach when hiring managers are most active – evenings, weekends, or during industry meetups.
  • Execution: Use a “board wax” approach – add a little extra polish to my cover letter, a splash of personal touch in my messages.
  • Leash: Keep my follow‑ups short but sticky; a quick thank‑you note after a call is like a good leash that keeps you from drifting.

I keep getting stuck in the “wave” of my resume and it’s like a big wave that’s hard to ride. If anyone can help me tweak my approach, I’m all ears… and maybe a little nervous too.

Any devs who’ve ridden a wave of a job change and can share the exact board model or set‑up that worked for you? Or maybe someone who can point me to a community that uses surf‑jargon in a tech context?

Thanks in advance, hope this makes sense to you.

P.S. I’m still learning the proper use of a “shaper’s touch” in code reviews, so any feedback is appreciated!
