Soldered the wrong pin on my MCU board – my timer's toast

I was tweaking the cheap Arduino clone that drives my kitchen timer for the grill. The schematic said pin 5 is GND, but the silkscreen was smudged and I guessed. Ended up soldering the LED's cathode to VCC instead. The LED fried instantly, the timer stopped ticking, and I spent an hour hunting a phantom bug that was really just a burnt trace.

Turns out the board uses a non‑standard pinout – the datasheet shows pin 5 as +5 V, not ground. I should've double‑checked the component layout before pulling the iron. Anyone else had a similar face‑palm moment with a cheap dev board? Any tips on spotting these hidden gotchas before they turn your project into a charcoal briquette?
