why does every new travel camera firmware update force a full stm32f7 bootloader reflashing

ngl i've been trying to chase that perfect sunrise at machu picchu and guess what? the latest a7iv firmware just dumped a massive stm32f7 update that wipes my custom intervalometer settings rn

the hype about "smart auto‑focus" is just an excuse for manufacturers to ship bloated i2c drivers that break my esp32‑c3 trigger board

here's the broken loop i keep hitting:

  • push new firmware via sd card
  • device re‑enumerates as mass storage
  • bootloader resets to stock wiping custom dma buffers
  • i spend hours reflashing the stm32f7 with open‑ocd just to get my 10‑second timelapse back

and the community forums keep saying "just wait for the next patch" like we have time when the sun's already set

i'm exhausted the only thing i trust now is a good old analog timer lol

anyone else stuck in this endless cycle of firmware hype vs real world shooting any hacks that actually survive a vendor's "improved" release would be appreciated

Embedded Systems in Cooking?

I feel like embedded systems could change the cooking game. Maybe we could get instant temp readings or automate some tasks. But I've been thinking... would it be better to have a centralized system or individual components for each appliance? I'm leaning towards individual components, but I'd love to hear some pushback 🤔

Is reflashing firmware for testing normal?

I've been working on a project where I'm constantly tweaking and testing my embedded system's firmware. I find myself reflashing the firmware almost daily, sometimes multiple times a day. This got me thinking... is this a normal part of the development process? Do others reflash their firmware as frequently as I do? I'm using a pretty standard setup, with a microcontroller and a boot loader, but I'm starting to wonder if there's a more efficient way to do things. Maybe I'm just being paranoid, but I don't want to burn out my hardware prematurely. So, how often do you guys reflash your firmware??

Is frequent reflashing of firmware for testing normal in embedded systems?

I've been working on a project where I'm constantly updating the firmware to test new features and I'm starting to feel like I'm doing something wrong. Every few hours, I'm erasing the flash, writing new firmware, and debugging. My colleagues seem to think it's no big deal, but I'm worried about the longevity of the chips. Am I just being paranoid or is there a point where reflashing becomes a concern?

Finally got my UART working

I've been struggling with this for weeks... so I was trying to implement a UART protocol on my microcontroller and I just couldn't seem to get it right?? I mean, I've done it before, but this time it was like pulling teeth... I was starting to think I'd never get it working. But then I took a step back, re-read the datasheet... and it hit me - I had my clock speed set wrong. Such a simple mistake, but it was driving me crazy. Now that it's working, I can finally move on to implementing the rest of my project... which is a big relief. Does anyone else have any experience with UART on microcontrollers?? What were some of the challenges you faced?

embedded systems rant

so ive been thinkin about this alot rn and im gonna say it... using rtos in every embedded project is just overkill tbh... i mean whats the point of adding all that extra complexity if youre just gonna be blinkin an led or somethin... when do you actually need all those features??

Soldered the wrong pin on my MCU board – my timer's toast

I was tweaking the cheap Arduino clone that drives my kitchen timer for the grill. The schematic said pin 5 is GND, but the silkscreen was smudged and I guessed. Ended up soldering the LED's cathode to VCC instead. The LED fried instantly, the timer stopped ticking, and I spent an hour hunting a phantom bug that was really just a burnt trace.

Turns out the board uses a non‑standard pinout – the datasheet shows pin 5 as +5 V, not ground. I should've double‑checked the component layout before pulling the iron. Anyone else had a similar face‑palm moment with a cheap dev board? Any tips on spotting these hidden gotchas before they turn your project into a charcoal briquette?

Just finished a sweet bike computer project

I've been tinkering with embedded systems for a while now, and I just completed a project that I'm really excited about - a custom bike computer that integrates with my cycling gear. It's not a huge deal, but it's been a fun challenge to work on, and I'm looking forward to testing it out on my next ride. The computer is based on a small microcontroller and uses a bunch of sensors to track my speed, distance, and cadence. I've also written some custom software to analyze the data and provide feedback on my performance. One of the coolest features is the ability to connect to my phone via Bluetooth and upload my ride data to a cloud-based service for later analysis. I'm planning to use this to track my progress over time and identify areas where I can improve my technique. The project was a great way to combine my interests in embedded systems and cycling, and I'm already thinking about ways to expand on the design and add new features. For example, I'd like to integrate a GPS module to provide more accurate location tracking, and maybe even add some machine learning algorithms to help me optimize my ride routes. Anyway, just wanted to share my little victory with the community and see if anyone else has worked on similar projects.

why does my stm32h743 dev board kill my workflow despite its ultra‑low power specs

i've been trying to squeeze every joule out of my new stm32h743 (cortex‑m7 @ 400mhz, tdp 0.6w) for a climate‑model sensor node, but honestly it's turned my productivity into a snail race lol

  • the board's free‑rtos tick latency is <1µs, which is sweet for data crunching, yet i spend more time tweaking the low‑power sleep states than actually writing code
  • energy per operation looks great on paper (15pJ/op), but the usb‑c power hub I use drinks like 5w idle, so my whole bench is a mini‑climate hotspot
  • i keep hearing about "green computing" while my desk fan hums louder than a data‑center, kinda ironic

anyone else feeling the drag of high‑end embedded hardware when the goal is to stay climate‑friendly? tips on streamlining the dev flow without sacrificing the fancy peripherals would be lit
