why does ltp in hippocampal ca1 neurons require nmda receptors but not ampas

tbh so i was reading about synaptic plasticity and i stumbled upon this thing that says ltp in hippocampal ca1 neurons is mediated by nmda receptors and not ampas which doesnt make sense to me cuz i thought ampas were the ones responsible for fast synaptic transmission can someone explain this to me or am i just misreading the whole thing
