Planning a whole day on paper is dumb—just roll with it
You know the vibe when a crew starts the trip and everyone’s pulling out notebooks, ticking off miles and coffee breaks like some holy itinerary? I keep thinking why bother…?\n\nSure it sounds good to have a roadmap, but you actually end up losing the whole point of a drive. The suspense of not knowing where you’ll next pull over, the spontaneous pit stops—those are the things that make the ride memorable, not a pre‑planned checklist.\n\nPeople say ‘stay on schedule’ or ‘don’t miss the tunnel.’ Great, but why? You could still hit the tunnel, maybe by accident or a random detour. The risk? The driver becomes a robotic engine chasing numbers instead of a human catching a sunset or a hidden roadside diner.\n\nAnd if your ‘plan’ has a fixed route, a bad turn or a construction stop means you’re staring at an updated GPS that only wastes time. You end up blaming the map instead of noticing you’ve gotten lost in the first place. Those moments of panic actually build stories, not frustration over a missed mile marker.
Also the whole idea that a whole day is locked down? Nobody sticks to that—most of us spontaneously deviate when we hear a billboard or see a truck trail behind us. The extra 5-10 minutes to check a new route or chase a random gas station? I’ll say: great, live in the moment, not in a spreadsheet.\n\nBottom line, scrap the full itinerary. Just get on the road and let curiosity decide the next turn. You’re basically giving up one of the best parts of the trip by planning it in advance.\n\nAnyone actually benefits from the whole‑plan approach or does it feel like an exercise in futility?\n\n…
Hiking solo is overrated
I feel like people tend to romanticize hiking alone... maybe it's just me, but I've had way more meaningful experiences with a small group?? Like, wouldn't you rather share those breathtaking views with someone who can actually appreciate them?? I've been on some solo hikes where I've stumbled upon these amazing vistas, and it's just... flat, you know?? No one to high-five or take a crappy selfie with... what's the point of being at the top of a mountain if you can't even bother anyone with a brag post?? I mean, I know some people love the whole 'finding yourself' vibe, but isn't that just code for 'I'm boring and have no friends to hike with'...??
just got back from an epic sail
I know this is a hiking forum but I had to share - just got back from a sailing trip and I'm still on a high. The conditions were perfect and we caught some amazing wind. I feel like it's really similar to hiking, you know? The thrill of being out in nature, the rush of adrenaline when you're pushing yourself to the limit. Maybe I'm just biased because I love both activities, but I think sailors and hikers aren't that different 😊. We're all just chasing that next big thrill, right? Anyway, I was thinking of planning a hike soon to keep the adventure going - anyone have any good trail recs?
not a fan of tourist traps
ngl i feel like when we travel, we always get drawn into these super touristy areas and honestly, i think theyre kinda overrated lol. imo, the best experiences come from just wandering around and finding random local spots. maybe thats just me tho. i was in paris last year and instead of going to the eiffel tower, i ended up getting lost in this adorable little neighborhood and had the best croissants of my life. has anyone else had similar experiences? rn im thinking of planning a trip to japan and im trying to decide whether to stick to the usual destinations or venture out a bit
