questioning excavation methods
so i was reading about these new excavations in egypt and it got me thinking... are we really doing it right? i mean all this focus on preserving the site and avoiding contamination but whats the point if were not actually learning anything new? seems like were just uncovering stuff to stick it in a museum and call it a day. shouldnt we be trying to get to the bottom of what actually happened at these sites? not just collecting artifacts but really understanding the context
Do others meticulously document every find?
I spend hours documenting every detail of my excavations. Every pottery shard, every layer of soil. Is this normal?? I feel like I'm being too meticulous, but at the same time, I don't want to miss anything important. Do others really take the time to record every.single.detail??
questioning excavation methods
imo we're doing excavation all wrong... like why are we still using old techniques?? it's not like we're finding anything new or groundbreaking with the same old methods... what's the point of uncovering all this stuff if we're not gonna challenge our own ways of thinking about the past??
