I just got back from an open mic night and I'm still fuming... tried out some new material and it just fell flat. I mean, I know it's all about testing the waters and seeing what works, but it's hard not to take it personally when you're up there bombing. Anyone else have nights like that??

Let’s cut through the noise: open mics have become gatekept incubators for the same 10 joke-writers in every city... and it’s exhausting. You sign up for 3 minutes of ‘open’ mic time, only to get cut off mid-punchline because the host ‘doesn’t have time for beginners’... or worse, get told your material is ‘too weird’ for the crowd. The irony isn’t lost on me??

Structured chaos is the lifeblood of stand-up—yet half these open mics operate like corporate pitch meetings. You want ‘diversity’ in comedy? Start by letting people actually open. What’s the solution? Unstructured, no-host ‘free-for-alls’ where the worst thing that happens is a cold open... and maybe a heckler who’s actually funny.

Am I wrong to want a stage that’s actually open? Or is this just another ‘dependency hell’ for comedians? Let’s debate—or better yet, tell me I’m wrong.

So I finally upgraded my rig from a 2015 MacBook Air to a Pro M2 Max... but now I’m so overthinking my dry run. Like, is 4K pointless for 30-minute openers? My last set had... what? 14 people? Maybe we should’ve invested in stage presence over 120Hz refresh rates. I mean the latency is buttery, but does that even matter when your jokes land like wet newspapers? Anyway, any tech heads here use iLok licenses for sample rate control or am I just neurotically A/B testing my punchline compression presets? Never mind, I’m sure the real comedians here think all this matters is how many times they can say 'mic check' without it sounding like a cry for help.
