Help: How do I keep tension consistent in a 3D cable knit shawl using 4mm needles and 30% worsted wool?
i just wrapped up a 3d cable knit shawl using 4mm needles and 30% worsted wool from michaels #1
tbh the tension was a nightmare, especially around the cable turns
i tried using a 5mm stitch gauge but still got unevenness
any tips on how to keep the cable consistent when working in a 3D shape
also, i used a 12‑inch cable twist pattern but the edges frayed
any tricks to prevent that
i'd love feedback or any similar projects to share
thanks rn
Why does my Addi Clicks Interchangeable Needle Set keep splitting yarn when using bulky weight??
so ive been working on this knit scarf using some bulky weight yarn and my trusty Addi Clicks... but for some reason the yarn keeps splitting?? ive tried switching to a different needle size, ive tried adjusting my tension... nothing seems to work?? is it the yarn?? is it the needles?? im at my whits end here... i need to finish this project ASAP, anyone have any ideas?? or maybe someone knows of a good job opening for a knitwear designer??
why is my city rent still rising when inflation is falling?
fr i've been tracking the CPI drop these past months, looks like overall prices are finally chilling, but my monthly rent keeps creeping up. any thoughts on what forces landlords keep pushing rent higher despite the macro data? maybe some supply‑demand quirks or policy stuff? i'd love to hear some econ folks break it down for a regular renter like me. tbh i feel kinda stuck rn lol
hole in my scarf every 20 rows??
hey i think i'm messing up my tension on this pattern maybe its yarn drag not sure im just 2 weeks in it and see these holes pop up rn
Need yarn recommendation for a winter afghan, anyone swear by a brand?
i've been scrolling the yarn aisle for a big winter afghan but can't pick. everyone talks about wool being the only warm option, but i'm skeptical about the durability and price. any one got a solid yarn that is cheap enough, eco-friendly, and still cozy? don't give me the usual 'go with cheap wool' spiel, i want real experience. thanks
Struggling with proper alignment in the hundred—any tips?
I've been trying to nail the hundred but my lower back keeps aching. I thought I was doing it right, but maybe my form's off. Any of you have tips or common mistakes to watch for? I'm using a mat and following online videos, but it's hard to tell if I'm aligned properly.
frustrating crochet issue
so i'm working on this crochet blanket and i just can't seem to get the tension right. i've been crochetting for a while now, but this particular project is just giving me a hard time. i've tried using different hooks, different yarns, but nothing seems to be working. i've even watched some videos and read some tutorials, but i still can't get it just right. it's really frustrating because i know it's something simple, but i just can't figure it out. has anyone else ever had this problem? any tips or advice would be greatly appreciated
Lace shawl edge curling despite blocking—what’s the fix?
Working on a triangular lace shawl using Furls Merino Lace. Edges keep curling upward even after careful blocking. Followed the pattern’s tension requirements (22 sts x 28 rows over 10cm). Tried wet-blocking twice, checked for uneven tension. No difference.
Anyone else had this with similar yarn? The pattern uses alternating yarn overs and knit 2 together decreases. Could the stitch structure be causing this? I’ve considered adding a border stitch, but ripping out 300 stitches feels excessive. Suggestions?

Kata vs. Sparring: Which trains better for real fights?
So I've been looking up studies on old martial arts practices versus modern, live-training methods, and the results keep backfiring. A few academic articles I read argue that kata, as structured patterns, keep students’ footwork tight and ingrains muscle memory; other research claims that sparring's randomness creates a better mindset for real combat.
My question for this space: When you focus on self‑defence or competition, what’s the best balance of both approaches? Should the foundation be slow and methodical—repeating the same forms until you can perform them from instinct? Or should you drill in irregular contact environments to survive unexpected attacks?
A friend in the club suggested a 2‑to‑1 ratio: Kata 2, Sparring 1 for most students, because kata keeps technique crisp while sparring keeps it survivable. Others say any kata eventually feels artificial when an opponent is unpredictable. In the end, it’s hard to separate the psychological skill from the physical skill.
What does the experienced squad say? Are there examples, training programs, or personal experiences where one side clearly outshines the other? Looking forward to reading your solid takes.
Gym's new mandatory selfie rule is killing my vibe
So the gym rolled out this 'take a selfie at the entrance' thing and now I have to pause my warm‑up just to grin at a camera I get the marketing angle, but it feels like a cheap gimmick that interrupts the flow. Maybe I'm being dramatic, but having to line up for a quick snap right before deadlifts throws off my rhythm. Anyone else annoyed by this, or am I just overreacting? 🤔
Swatch wars are worse in the third dimension
So I finally got around to making a proper cabled infinity scarf this weekend Bought the suggested cotton blend on recommendations and followed the pattern for the tight twisted 7x8 grid from last fall. The tension test came out fine when laid flat... but once I tried forming that damn thing onto its first circle, the stitch gauge collapsed entirely around the cable centers. Looks like no matter how tight you try to keep your edges with short-rowing techniques around circular patterns, cotton behaves like liquid helium with memory loss every time steam is added for blocking. Any of y’all deal with this? Seems like half online tutorials pretend 100% bamboo doesn’t rearrange everything after a second wash.
any good yarn for beginner scarves that isn't super pricey?
so i’m looking to start a simple scarf project rn i want something soft but not super cheap cheap that falls apart any brands or specific yarns that are decent quality and won’t break the bank also love colors that aren’t too neon lol
Finally got that cable knit to work lol
tbh i was ready to give up on this scarf but the cables kept looking like a twisted mess y’all. so i watched a 5 min tutorial and realized i was doing the twist wrong. fixed it and now it’s literally holding together. proud of this tiny win 😅 wanna see it in a flatlay but i’m lazy rn. any tips for making the fringe even? #
finally got my ribbed scarf to hold shape
i was fighting with that ribbing for days rn it kept curling like a pretzel but i tried a tighter tension + a few extra rows of stockinette before the rib and now it sits flat lol no more lopsided vibes
Frustrating excavation experiences
I'm still getting annoyed thinking about my last archaeology dig. We excavated this site that was supposed to be a significant find, but the whole process was poorly organised. The equipment was subpar and we couldn't even get a decent reading on the terrain. It's amazing how some teams still can't get it together. I swear, it's like they've never done this before. Doesn't anyone learn from past mistakes anymore?
math error turns my blanket into geometry disaster
so i was trynin 2 calc the taper rate for a 3x3 rib pattern i used the wrong formula, ended up with 0.75 instead of 0.25 tbh the result was a blanket that bulges 5in at the center looks like a bad parabola lol any of u knittin folks run into this math glitch? i blame my calc
Stitch pattern math vs hyperbolic crochet physics?
ever try calculating taper rates on uneven grid structures? i’m trying to reverse engineer these fractal cables (yes those hyperbolic geometry models) but my head hurts converting sinh(x) into stitch counts. someone help with the calculus for negative-curvature shawls i saw this ai tool that ‘generates patterns’ but it just spits out the same garter stitch loops everyone does tbh how do i make actual asymmetric tessellations using modular arithmetic? also like ever tried to code a decrease rate formula? feels like training a machine learning model but way less elegant. need recs for non-euclidean math + needlecraft tools rn
