Finally nailed that simulated emergency landing!

I just completed my last session on the ATR 72 flight simulator and I actually made it into the holding area after the engine loss drill. For months the automatic system would let the planing pitch out, and I was stuck trying to keep it under 250 knots. I switched from the textbook‑ish procedures I was taught to the exact IFR step‑by‑step from the pilot manual, and it finally stuck. Anyone else struggled with that or can confirm it's the same hiccup on the real aircraft?

Got the right mineral ID on my first field test – finally

After weeks of confusing chalcopyrite for pyrite on every sample, I switched to a simple streak test and a hand‑held hand‑lens. One scratch on unglazed porcelain, a quick check of color and hardness, and the difference shouted itself. The first time I correctly identified a sulfide in the creek without consulting the lab, I actually felt a surge of competence. Anyone else still fighting the same misidentifications, or am I just lucky this time??

I tried the old trick of heating a crystal on a bunsen burner to see the reaction—completely unnecessary, but it reassured me the sample really is copper‑rich. If anyone has a faster way to confirm a sulfide in the field, feel free to drop it. Otherwise, enjoy my tiny victory; it's about time I stopped mixing up dull metallic flakes with bright brass‑like ones.

Why does meditation feel so... different lately?

I’ve been meditating 20 mins daily for months... but lately it feels like my brain is fighting me?? Like static in the background... or a weight behind the eyes. Not painful but weird. Any neuro folks here track physical changes in the prefrontal cortex? My friend swears her ‘clarity’ peak correlates with amygdala shrinkage... but how would that actually FEEL in practice? Asking because I bought a $300 EEG headset and need validation before I graph my alpha waves.

Why does the Pilates Reformer X-2000 claim to boost prefrontal cortex thickness by 5% in 2 weeks?

I read the Reformer X-2000 manual. It says 10‑minute daily sessions increase cortical thickness in the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex by 5% after two weeks. No other equipment does that. Is this legit or just marketing hype?? I tried it for a week and felt more focused, but could be placebo. Anyone got data or studies confirming this claim? Or is the manual wrong about neurogenesis pathways??

Astrophotography Capture Issue with Canon EOS 80D and SkyWatcher EQ5

So I've been trying to get some decent astrophotography shots with my Canon EOS 80D and SkyWatcher EQ5 mount, but I've been running into this weird issue where my stars are coming out all trailed and blurry. I've checked my polar alignment and it seems fine, but I'm starting to think it might be an autoguiding problem. I'm using a separate laptop to control the mount and camera, and I've got the autoguiding software set up to correct for any tracking errors. But for some reason, it's just not working like it should. Has anyone else out there had any experience with this kind of issue? I've tried adjusting the autoguiding settings and even switched to a different guide camera, but nothing seems to be working. I'm starting to get pretty frustrated with it, so any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

is it normal to prioritize tasks based on mood

i find myself doing this alot, where i only do tasks that i feel like doing at the moment, instead of following a set schedule or priority list. is this a normal way to work or am i just being lazy

finally got spike detection working on the lab's old Arduino

tbh just ran the spike sorting script again and the thresholding finally picks up the action potentials on the 5ch board rn i've been stuck on that for like a week it felt like a big win but i know it's a tiny step in the grand scheme tbh the noise was lower than expected and the peaks popped up cleanly no more false positives now i'm going to push the parameters a bit more to see if it scales to 12ch

Why do neuroscience studies cite CRT refresh rates for response time but ignore 90s-era SNES input lag (21.5us)?

tbh i lost it when i saw a 2023 paper on visual processing use '90s arcade machine specs' but ignored how snes devs could squeeze 60fps input via the 8580 ppu. modern oleds get all the hate but we had sub-10ms input lag on 16b systems imo. am i missing some critical part of this equation rn ?

Yoga is overrated for stress?

Hate to burst the bubble... but I’ve done yoga for years and never felt less stressed. The poses are fine but the whole vibe feels performative? Like you’re faking calm instead of finding it... Maybe I’m doing it wrong? Or is the hype just... hype? Meditation apps say ‘5 mins daily’ but who has 5 mins of undisturbed focus??

Why do politicians keep cherry-picking scientific issues?

Ugh, another week of policy limbo. I’m not a regular politics person, but when some state senator calls for a ‘review’ of climate change funding then blocks NIH grants the next month? That’s my trigger. It’s like they treat every topic in a vacuum—selectively pick which facts are inconvenient depending on the day’s agenda. How do we even have research continuity when the rules keep shifting under us? Maybe they don’t realize half our papers depend on both environmental and health policy? Or… wait no they know, but the game’s all spin. What’s the fix here, fellow nerds? Just grit our teeth and wait for another round of contradictory headlines?

3D printing waste

Anyone else tired of all the failed prints piling up? I've got a whole box of misprinted parts and I don't know what to do with them. Is there a better way to handle this or are we all just hoarding plastic junk?

Pilates fail... anyone else?

Okay I need to fess up. For months I thought Pilates was just… core workouts? Like I’d show up thinking ‘the hundred’ and ‘roll-up’ were all about abs?? Turns out my glutes were doing 80% of the work the whole time... How’d I get that wrong?? Any instructors here wanna drop knowledge? Or others with dumb assumptions?

embarrassing admission

I've been target shooting for years and I still get annoyed when I think about the time I forgot to switch to my target ammo and ended up putting highpower rounds through my favorite paper targets. It was a waste of good targets and ammo. I was lucky nothing else was damaged. Has anyone else made a mistakes like that? I guess it's just a reminder that no matter how much you think you know, you can still be careless. By the way, I've been meaning to start a discussion on how neuroscience plays into our aim and shooting abilities.

success! got stable STDP data after two weeks of noise

finally nailed clean spike-timing curves rn after patching the ADC gain and pulling the extra ground reference on the 10x cable the data is consistent with the paper figures the noise dropped 15dB i can actually see the long-term potentiation pattern tbh feeling weird excited about the next phase of stimulation we should post the traces later lol
