Help: Can Dritz 18–0 nylon (00W) sustain a light tarp in high‑wind conditions?
So here’s what happened. I was hiking near the backwoods trail when a sudden squall turned the wind 80 mph. My small tarp went out of shape, and I had only a handful of 18‑0 nylon Dritz (#00W) for a makeshift repair. I tied a 6‑ft length in a knot on both ends and hooked it across a 10‑ft span of the tarp.
- The thread was under roughly 200 lb total from the wind when the test wind stopped.
- It snapped after just 30 seconds, pulling the tarp flat. I could see the knotted ends flared as if it tried to hold.
- According to the data sheet, the nylon has a tensile strength of ~110 g, but the sheet didn't list an ultimate tensile force under 120‑rpm cycling.
What did I misinterpret? Was I blowing the tension by knot‑ting so heavily, or is it that 18–0 is just too delicate for a storm scenario? I’ve never done an outdoor fix with this kind of thread, so I’m stuck in a weird intersection of hobby and survival. I think a lot of us here might know a trick for the last meter to stretch a nylon string? Or maybe it’s better to use 16–0 for these circumstances?
Looking for any other tales of embroidery‑thread rescuers in the outdoors, or maybe a rule of thumb on when it’s safe to swap craft filament for real‑world tension.
